{"id":1055,"date":"2020-12-30T13:38:29","date_gmt":"2020-12-30T13:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.miriamlanzetta.com\/?p=1055"},"modified":"2021-12-15T16:56:40","modified_gmt":"2021-12-15T15:56:40","slug":"new-pmp-exam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.miriamlanzetta.com\/en\/2020\/12\/30\/new-pmp-exam\/","title":{"rendered":"New PMP exams: tips and study materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Since the 2nd January 2021, the new exam for the <em>Project Management Professional<\/em> (<strong>PMP<\/strong>)\u00ae Certification of the <em>Project Management Institute<\/em> has changes. In this post, you will find an overview of the most significant changes, along with tips and resources to prepare for the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New domains<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The changes derive from the latest Role Delineation Study, conducted by the Project Management Institue in 2019. All the previous similar studies led to some small changes, but always within the five domains Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Control, Closing. The last study, on the other hand, revealed the need to review the domains as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>People<\/strong>, related to the skills and activities associated with the effective leadership of a project team;<\/li><li><strong>Process<\/strong>, for the technical management aspects;<\/li><li><strong>Business Environment<\/strong>, related to the connection between projects and organizational strategy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also changes the way domains are defined. The traditional ones were defined based on activities, knowledge, and skills, while the new domains on <strong>tasks<\/strong> and <strong>enablers<\/strong>. By <em>tasks<\/em> we mean the project manager's fundamental responsibilities within each domain, while <em>enablers<\/em> are illustrative models of the work connected with the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Therefore, the new structure is defined in terms of the activities for which the project manager is responsible and provides examples related to this responsibility.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An example, provided by the PMI in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/certifications\/project-management-pmp\/earn-the-pmp\/pmp-exam-preparation\/pmp-exam-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>PMP Exam Content Outline<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Task<\/strong><\/td><td><em>Manage conflict<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Enablers <\/strong><\/td><td class=\"translation-block\">\u2013  Interpret the source and stage of the conflict;<br>\u2013 analyze the context of the conflict;<br>\u2013 evaluate\/recommend\/reconcile an adequate solution capable of resolving the conflict.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distribution of tasks and enablers is the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>People<\/em> includes 14 tasks and 53 enablers;<\/li><li><em>Process<\/em> includes 17 tasks and 61 enablers;<\/li><li><em>Business environment<\/em> includes 4 tasks and 19 enablers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exam question<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The questions, which will be a combination of multiple-choice and answer, matching, hotspots, and fields to be filled, will no longer be focused on predictive project management approaches but now we have a perfect <strong>perfect balance between predictive, agile, and hybrid approaches.<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The largest number of questions will be focused on the Process and People domains: of the 180 exam questions (previously there were 200), 50% will be focused on Process, 42% on People, while only 8% will focus on Business Environment. Before, the questions were divided into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Initiating 13%<\/li><li>Planning 24%<\/li><li>Executing 31%<\/li><li>Monitoring and Controlling 25%<\/li><li>Closing 7%<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three domains have new content compared to the previous version of the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>People<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"translation-block\">-Value <em>servant leadership<\/em>;<br>\u2013 measure training outcomes;<br>\u2013 maintain team and knowledge transfer;<br>\u2013 assess behavior through the use of personality indicators;<br>\u2013 analyze personality indicators and adjust to the emotional needs of key project\nstakeholders.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Process<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"translation-block\">\u2013 Assess opportunities to deliver value incrementally;<br>\u2013 support the team to subdivide project tasks as necessary to find the Minimum Viable Product;<br>\u2013 coordinate with other projects and other operations;<br>\u2013 recommend a project methodology\/approach (i.e., predictive, agile, hybrid);<br>\u2013 use iterative, incremental practices throughout the project life cycle (e.g., lessons\nlearned, stakeholder engagement, risk);<br>\u2013 confirm the approach for knowledge transfers.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Business Environment<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"translation-block\">- Classify compliance categories;<br>- determine potential threats to compliance; <br> - use methods to support compliance; <br>- analyze the consequences of noncompliance; <br>- determine the necessary approach and action to address compliance needs (e.g., risk, legal)<br> - measure the extent to which the project is in compliance;<br>- verify measurement system is in place to track benefits;<br>- evaluate delivery options to demonstrate value;<br>- assess and prioritize impact on project scope\/backlog based on changes in the external business environment;<br>- recommend options for scope\/backlog changes (e.g., schedule, cost changes)<br>- continually review external business environment for impacts on project scope\/backlog;<br>- assess organizational culture;<br>- evaluate the impact of organizational change on the project and determine required actions;<br>- evaluate the impact of the project on the organization and determine required actions.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">For the complete list of each domain's content, the PMI developed a <strong>Crossover Map<\/strong>, available at this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/-\/media\/pmi\/documents\/public\/pdf\/certifications\/pmp-exam-content-crossover-map-2020.pdf?v=b087a3a2-f1c7-448e-b6f3-b864524e05b5\" target=\"_self\"><strong>link<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study material<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The exam's main references are the  <strong>sixth <\/strong>and<strong> seventh editions of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge<\/strong> (PMBOK\u00ae Guide). <strong>Please, note: the main, but not exclusive resources<\/strong>: the PMP is a competency-based certification that evaluates the integrated set of knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired from practical and learned experiences. <strong>The exam is based on the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/certifications\/project-management-pmp\/earn-the-pmp\/pmp-exam-preparation\/pmp-exam-updates\" target=\"_self\"><strong>PMP Examination Content Outline<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>the Guide is only one fo the main references<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The PMI suggested the following (non-exhaustive) list of study material:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK\u00ae Guide) \u2013 6th Edition<\/em>, authored and published by the PMI;<\/li><li><em>Agile Practice Guide<\/em>, authored and published by the PMI;<\/li><li><em>Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling, and Controlling<\/em>, by Harold Kerzner, published by Wiley;<\/li><li><em>Effective Project Management: Traditional, Agile, Extreme, Hybrid<\/em>, by Robert K.
